Senators Accuse Sessions Of 'Stonewalling' On Russia Inquiry

14 Juin 2017

Sessions told the Senate Intelligence Committee he had a different reason for not answering certain questions: It's how such matters have been handled in the Justice Department for years.

In a similar exchange last week, Harris was cut off by McCain when she posed a question to Deputy Attorney Rod Rosenstein and Burr ended up stepping in and asked Harris to let Rosenstein speak.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has heatedly denied that he had any undisclosed meeting with the Russian ambassador or conversations with Russian officials about the USA elections. "Since it came to light Sessions misled during his testimony in front of the Senate, I have called on him to resign", she tweeted.

In a testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee last week, Comey raised red flags when he said that prior to Sessions' recusal, the FBI was aware of information that would have made his continued involvement in the Russian Federation investigation "problematic". The Oregon Democrat was questioning Sessions about why he could sign the letter recommending the firing of Comey if it violated his recusal. The FBI is part of the Justice Department that Sessions heads.

Sessions has landed center stage in the ongoing controversy and criminal investigation into the Trump campaign's ties with Russian Federation because of a question Minnesota Senator Al Franken asked five months ago.

"I'm not able to discuss with you, or confirm or deny, the nature of a private conversation that I may have had with the President on this subject or others", Mr. Sessions said.

Sessions Denies Third Meeting With Russian Ambassador
His impassioned response came after Senate Democrats raised questions about whether Sessions privately met with Kislyak. Comey had told senators in a closed-door briefing that agents were investigating another possible meeting between Mr.

Asked if he colluded with the Kremlin during the presidential campaign, Mr Sessions described claims against him as an "appalling and detestable lie". Al Franken. In January, during his confirmation hearing, Sessions told the Minnesota Democrat that he "did not have communications with the Russians". In the picture, Sessions could be seen speaking with two men who were standing with their backs to the camera.

Spicer, the spokesman, declined to say then that Sessions enjoyed Trump's confidence, though spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said later in the week that the president had confidence "in all of his Cabinet".

Sessions recused himself on March 2 after reports emerged that he had twice met with the Russian ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak, during the election, contradicting his statements under oath in his Senate confirmation hearing that he did not have contacts with Russians during the campaign.

Angus King asked a number of questions about the basis for Sessions' refusal to answer questions, to which Sessions simply responded the president was not asserting executive privilege, but that he was protecting Trump's right to do so if he chooses. Sessions previously offered to resign because of tensions with Trump over his recusal decision. Sessions said he "racked my brain" and had no meeting with any Russian in his capacity as a Trump campaign adviser. But our attorney general, who is the top law enforcement official in the country, and the rest of the Trump administration seem unconcerned by that disturbing truth. "I'm not sure what was in his mind, specifically". He said simply that he had no "recollection" of the meeting. "I can tell you for absolute certain". Many questions aimed at Sessions had to do with Comey's firing by President Donald Trump.

In light of his recusal from the Russian Federation investigation, he said that he does not receive briefings on the investigation and does not have any more information than what is publicly reported and said he doesn't read that information closely. That encounter appears to have been the one at the Mayflower. But: When Comey brought it up the next day, Sessions said he agreed it wasn't a good idea to be alone with the president.
