An intimate, heart-wrenching musical about loneliness, teen angst and suicide in the age of hyperconnectivity capped its unlikely journey to Broadway smash by winning top honors at the Tonys. "Oslo", a three-hour meditation on diplomacy, was named best play.
Platt, in his acceptance speech, addressed young people who might be suffering some of the social anxiety faced by his character, high school senior Evan Hansen. He had this inspiring message to young people out there: "The things that make you odd are the things that make you powerful". Midler took the stage in a sequin gown, and made it clear she wouldn't leave the podium until she was good and ready.
Midler took the best actress trophy and - to the amusement and cheers of the audience - refused to be played off, forcing the swelling orchestra into silence. His Frank Underwood from "House of Cards" makes a late appearance, and he and Patti LuPone close the show with a lovely duet of "The Curtain Falls" by Bobby Darin, a role he played onscreen.
Unlike past year, when "Hamilton" dominated the show and won 11 Tonys, the wealth was spread out this time.
Those watching will see musical numbers from nine new and revival musicals, "Bandstand", "Come From Away", "Dear Evan Hansen", "Falsettos", "Groundhog Day The Musical", "Hello, Dolly!".
Broadway enjoyed a record-breaking season this year thanks to last year's Tony victor and pop culture juggernaut "Hamilton", and musicals like "Sunset Boulevard", starring Glenn Close, and "Hello, Dolly!".
The leading musical Tony nominees are "Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812", with 12 nominations, "Hello, Dolly!" with 10 and "Dear Evan Hansen", with nine.
"Dear Evan Hansen" came into the night as the second-leading Tony nominee. Gavin Creel won his first Tony for featured actor in a musical in "Hello, Dolly!".

It also said Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond is pushing her to prioritize jobs and the economy in the Brexit talks. Their 10 lawmakers give her a working majority after her own party failed to win enough seats to govern by itself.
"Oslo" playwright Rogers, making his Broadway debut, thanked "The ladies and gentlemen who believed in democracy, who believed in peace, who believed in seeing their enemies as humans, I give this up to you".
Cynthia Nixon won her second Tony, this time for her work in Lillian Hellman's "The Little Foxes".
Noting one of its lines about people who "eat the Earth" and others who "watch them do it", Nixon praised present-day activists as "the people who in 2017 are refusing to just stand around and watch them do it".
Best Revival of a Play: "August Wilson's Jitney".
Spacey even had fun with speculation about his sexual orientation while singing the Andrew Lloyd Webber song "As If We Never Said Goodbye" from "Sunset Boulevard".
"I'm coming out", he sang in a black and gold dress, before adding: "Wait, no, wait".
And he didn't leave USA politics behind for the evening - the star impersonated former United States president Bill Clinton and appeared on stage as his House of Cards character Frank Underwood.
"For a minute, I thought that was really Clinton", Biden said, at the after-party for the award show at the Plaza Hotel. "Hamilton" - God bless, great show; it reinvigorated everything - but there isn't that feeling that the season is owned by one show", she said. "I still have you on there", Biden said, and quipped, "I probably ruined your reputation".
