12 Juin 2017

"Dear Evan Hansen", a daringly unflinching exploration of loss, lies and loneliness in a high school community, won the 2017 Tony Award for the best musical. The show's writer, Steven Levenson, won for best book of a musical, and Alex Lacamoire earned one for best orchestrations (after winning past year for "Hamilton.") And Rachel Bay Jones won her first Tony - featured actress - for her heartbreaking portrayal of a mother who struggles to understand and help her son, Evan, as he gets caught in a awful lie that he can not control.

Gavin Creel won best featured actor in a musical for "Hello, Dolly!" and "August Wilson's Jitney" won best revival of a play.

Laurie Metcalf won her first Tony, winning best actress honors in "A Doll's House, Part 2".

This year's host, Kevin Spacey, opened the ceremony with an array of special guests hoping to offer their insight on how to be the flawless host. It was a good way to address the two most talked-about leading man musical performances this season in a light, fun, and theatrical way!

"Dear Evan Hansen" came into the night as the second-leading Tony nominee.

Native New Yorker Cynthia Nixon took home the Tony for Featured Actress for her role in "The Little Foxes". Rebecca Taichman won best directing play honors for "Indecent".

"Come From Away", the Canadian musical won just one: for best direction, by Christopher Ashley. Last year, all eyes were on how many statuettes "Hamilton" would capture.

But one thing they won't get to hear is Bette Midler sing after talks failed to land the diva, who is starring in a hit revival of "Hello, Dolly".

"Am I dreaming? Is this some kind of insane dream?" she asked.

"Groundhog Day", an adaptation of the film, was shut out. How about: His impression of Bill Clinton even caught the fancy of a former vice president in the audience - Joe Biden.

Other show highlights will be the return of the Rockettes on a Tony stage after 13 years and the decision to have all four playwrights nominated for best play Tonys appear to present their works. He dedicated it to 9/11 first responders and all those who were generous on that bad day. "I'm Broadway bound", he sang.

A play inspired by the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and Norwegian husband and wife diplomats behind the 1993 Oslo Accords was crowned best play on New York's Broadway Sunday at the Tony Awards.

Broadway producers will be thankful this year that the telecast won't have to compete with any NBA Finals games, but there will be a Stanley Cup playoff game.

"It will be like they never asked the other guys", Spacey joked.
