Stress test: High-wire Cavaliers still alive in NBA Finals

11 Juin 2017

Two weeks later, Durant signed a maximum contract that put him in a Golden State uniform for at least one season, with several more seasons likely to come.

Opening the game with the highest-scoring quarter and half in NBA Finals history, the Cavaliers became the first finals team trailing 3-0 to force a fifth game since the 1996 Seattle SuperSonics.

The Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Warriors 137-116 in Game 4 of the Finals on Friday night to avoid elimination.

LeBron James also provided his fair share to the Cavaliers' spectacle thanks to another triple-double (31 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists). "If we play like we did tonight, it's very possible".

"We were in attack mode", James said. We shared the ball, we moved the ball and defensively we were physical. At the end of the day, we want to just try to put ourselves in position to play another game, and we did that and hopefully we can do it Monday night where we can come back here.

The Cavs set Finals records with 86 points in the first half, 49 in the first quarter, and 3-pointers in a game (24).

No team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit to win an National Basketball Association playoff series.

The Cavs became the first team in National Basketball Association history to recover from a 3-1 deficit in the Finals last season.

It's been done on big stages in other sports, perhaps most famously by the 2004 Boston Red Sox, who strung together four wins over the New York Yankees to win the AL pennant on the way to their first World Series title since 1918.

Cavaliers fans were chanting, "Cavs in seven" in the final minutes.

"Believeland is not going to give up", Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said, "and we're going to keep fighting".

They couldn't do it in this same situation past year.

Coach Steve Kerr said his players aren't anxious about the past. James said his mom didn't want him to leave the Miami Heat for the Cavs because of the letter Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert wrote to fans the night James bolted for the Heat in 2010. "I think it was we played a desperate team on their home floor, a great team, with great players, and they came out and handed it to us".

"No one would be surprised if someone said San Antonio won a championship at the beginning of the season". A triple double is notching 10 or more in three different statistical categories - typically points, rebounds and assists.

The 2017 Golden State Warriors were up 3-0 in the NBA Finals.

In any event, the Cavs are still breathing and it's now the Warriors who may be feeling the pressure after blowing a 3-1 lead last June. Golden State could never get into a fluent rhythm as a result. Apparently, the first technical foul was directed at coach Steve Kerr.

Later, Warriors center Zaza Pachulia was involved in a pileup of players and delivered two swipes to Iman Shumpert's groin area as the referees tried to get control. Instead of an ejection for Pachulia, however, he and Shumpert were slapped with technicals.

One last note on Cleveland's 49-point first quarter: The last time a team scored more than that in a first quarter was 1990, when Phoenix dropped 50 on Denver.

And beyond their firepower, the Cavs did it on defense, holding the up-and-down Warriors without a single fast-break point.

Every time the Warriors made a push, the Cavaliers answered with a timely shot. Green added 16 points and 14 rebounds and Stephen Curry was 4 of 13 for 14 points. "Listen, you ain't got to go undefeated". No one else has more than two.
