Kane silences Scotland's celebration with late leveller

11 Juin 2017

England shipped two late Leigh Griffiths free-kicks in Saturday's 2018 World Cup qualifier, only for new captain Harry Kane to rescue a point by volleying in a 93rd-minute equaliser.

"It was an important moment for the team and an important moment individually for Harry", Southgate told his post-match media conference.

"It was one of the most emotional games in my managerial career", he said. Today we didn't stop and a real quality finish got us the point.

Kane's goal was the Tottenham Hotspur striker's sixth in 18 global appearances and came at the end of his first game under Southgate, after injuries had kept him out of England's six previous matches.

Gordon Strachan's side are six points behind Group F leaders England with four fixtures remaining. As a manager that was hard work.

England still have work to do to secure World Cup qualification, but preparations for Russian Federation are well under way as Gareth Southgate attempts to prevent their all-too-frequent major tournament struggles.

"I have got to say it was like watching a heavyweight boxer versus a middleweight", Strachan said. I think there is great potential, there is a desire on their part, they are showing pride in playing for the shirt but of course we have an enormous journey to go on to match teams who have already won World Cups and European Championships with players who are Champions League winners regularly and used to playing in the highest games. "They keep coming back at you", he said. The power and strength and speed of England is phenomenal.

Qatar blockade: Gulf states silent on Tillerson plea to ease measures
The United Arab Emirates on Friday hailed "President Trump's leadership in challenging Qatar's troubling support for extremism". On Saturday, he told Bahrain's foreign minister that the dispute should be resolved by the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

"To put the work that he put in and then have a free-kick, when you're exhausted at the end of the game, and be able to execute it is phenomenal". He's a great character, you know.

But Scotland went looking for an equaliser, and Griffiths curled a strike inches wide before eventually finding the back of the net with his fine 87th-minute free kick to the left of a diving Joe Hart. Brilliant for him that in a pressure moment he executed a skill that I think he made look a lot easier than actually it was. You don't often see that.

"That could have been my best result as a manager, and I've been lucky enough to get some good ones: Manchester United, AC Milan and people like that".

Fans needed a bit of patience before the sixth arrived courtesy of Julian Brandt, whose first worldwide goal came in the 72nd, and Wagner completed the rout with five minutes remaining.

"I think it's a huge moment for the team", said Southgate, who took his squad to a military training camp on a team-building exercise last week.

"You try to protect yourself from the excitement but when we equalised I didn't, because that could have been my best result as a manger".
