Trump's lawyer accuses Comey of perjury

09 Juin 2017

In that testimony, Comey said that Trump demanded his "loyalty" and directly pushed him to "lift the cloud" of investigation by declaring publicly the president was not a target of the FBI probe into his campaign's Russian Federation ties.

Trump's tweet said: "Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication. and WOW, Comey is a leaker".

In referring to Comey, Trump was citing the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's acknowledgment that he had asked a friend to leak his memos about his conversations with the president. "No plausible case. We must distinguish crimes from" political "sins".

The White House announced on June 5 that Trump would not invoke executive privilege around Comey's Senate testimony, although that was before Comey's prepared remarks, which discussed his memos, were released on June 7 in advance of the hearing. Comey testified that during that dinner, Trump asked Comey to pledge personal loyalty to him, saying, "I need loyalty, I expect loyalty".

But the self-imposed silence didn't last.

Trump is also expected to face journalists later Friday in a joint news conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, who is visiting the White House.

Comey's testimony provided a gripping account of his interactions with Trump and underscored the discord that had soured their relationship.

The rift between Trump and Comey was also clear on Thursday, when Comey expressed confidence that the American people should choose to believe him - not Trump - at the hearing.

He said that he'd carefully documented his interactions with Trump because he anxious Trump would misrepresent them, and accused the administration of spreading "lies, plain and simple" about the reasons for his firing.

The network had said earlier it was "evaluating" its New Year's Eve coverage and called the picture " disgusting and offensive ". Admitting the images were "too disturbing", Griffin said she asked Shields to take down the photo.

But despite some issues involving Comey's actions which were seized on by Republicans, the overwhelming impression from the Comey testimony is its revelations about the president's conduct.

At one point he practically dared Trump to release any recordings of their conversations, a prospect the president once alluded to in a tweet.

"T$3 he President never, in form or substance, directed or suggested that Mr. Comey stop investigating anyone, including suggesting that that [sic] Mr. Comey "let Flynn go, '" it says". The New York Times reported that Comey had told associates that Trump was "outside the realm of normal", even "crazy".

In a statement on Thursday in response to Comey's testimony, Kasowitz accused Comey of leaking "privileged information" to the press.

"What we're talking about is a sitting president of the United States and whether the administration took an action to fire the FBI director in a historic way because of a desire to take the pressure off the Russian Federation investigation", he told CNN. But her words didn't blunt the implication of Comey's charge. Comey wanted to get his account out, perhaps encouraging the appointment of a special prosecutor.

Comey's testimony, as the intelligence committee considers allegations of Russian interference in last year's presidential election, described Trump as someone who put loyalty to him above loyalty to the Constitution.

"My judgment was I needed to get that out into the public square, so I asked a friend of mine to share the content of the memo with a reporter", Comey explained.

While Comey testified that he indeed told Trump on numerous occasions he was not personally under investigation, he also indicated Trump is now under scrutiny by Special Counsel Bob Mueller for possible obstruction of justice.
