Gulf row: Indians in Qatar advised to remain alert

09 Juin 2017

Qatar has played down media reports that its military has been on "high alert" along its land border with Saudi Arabia since a diplomatic crisis has erupted between Doha and its Gulf neighbours. All that comes amid a crackdown on all dissent on the island home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet and an under-construction British naval base.

The website block began Thursday and follows the UAE blocking access to a series of Qatari media websites, including those of Doha-based satellite news network Al-Jazeera.

The UAE's airspace will be closed to any planes flying to or from the Qatari capital until further notice, the country's civil aviation authority said on Thursday. It already had blocked Qatar Airlines flights as local airlines had cut their own routes to Doha.

Qatar strongly denies the allegations and has expressed a willingness to engage in talks to resolve the crisis. The advisory came in the wake of several Gulf nations cutting off diplomatic ties with Qatar earlier this week.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the federal minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, said Qatar and Pakistan last year signed a $1 billion agreement, under which Qatar's Liquefied Gas Company Limited will sell LNG from 2016 to year 2031 to state-run Pakistan State Oil. "I hope the sanctions against Qatar will be withdrawn as soon as possible", Erdogan said in a speech.

Trump initially took sides with the Saudi-led group before apparently being nudged into a more even-handed approach when USA defence officials renewed praise of Doha, mindful of the major US military base hosted by Qatar that serves, in part, as a launchpad for strikes on Islamic State jihadists.

The ministry did not say who it suspected carried out the attack, though it thanked the FBI and the British National Commission for Combating Crime for assisting it in its investigation.

Kuwait's Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah was met planeside by Qatar's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, when he arrived on Wednesday night.

Speaking to Abu Dhabi's crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahayan, Trump advocated unity among Gulf Arabs "but never at the expense of eliminating funding for radical extremism or defeating terrorism".

Saudi Arabia and other states cut travel and diplomatic links on Monday.

The Saudi newspaper al Watan published what it called a list of eight "extremist organisations" seen as working to destabilise the region from Qatar, including Qatar's al Jazeera news channel, that were targeted by Gulf Arab states.
