Legal experts: Comey account could fuel obstruction accusations against Trump

08 Juin 2017

"[Flynn] is a good guy", Trump supposedly assured Comey.

Tuesday morning, we knew with a lot of certainty that James Comey would testify that Trump had suggested he drop the Flynn investigation.

"The President said, 'I need loyalty, I expect loyalty, '" Comey writes.

By repeatedly asking Comey for his loyalty, repeatedly pressuring him to drop an investigation and then sacking him for not doing so, Trump has committed a potentially impeachable offence.

He also said that on March 30, during a phone call, Trump asked Comey what could be done to "lift the cloud" of the Russian Federation investigation.

Comey's opening statement is very narrowly focused on his interactions with President Trump, but there are other players he mentions, notably Attorney General Jeff Sessions. We simply looked at each other in silence. He is a good guy. "One of the things it does, it gets it out there, but it also gives the members of the committee that he'll be before tomorrow overnight to really sharpen their questions, and you might say cross-examination". Lieberman said, "I can say he did not make any demand like that at all".

To build a criminal obstruction of justice case, federal law requires prosecutors to show that a person acted with "corrupt" intent.

But while some said the statement was worrisome, Trump's lawyer said the president felt vindicated by Comey's testimony, because it confirmed that he was not under investigation with respect to the Russian Federation probe.

Creighton head coach Greg McDermott turns down Ohio State Buckeyes offer
According to sources, Butler head coach Chris Holtmann withdrew his name from consideration for the job on Tuesday night. The timing of Ohio State's move meant a high-profile coaching vacancy at a rare time in the sport's offseason.

He said that afterwards, he stayed behind to personally inform Trump of "potentially sensitive aspects" of their acquired information. Comey said he told Trump "you will always get honesty from me".

- Trump invites Comey to dinner which turns out to be a private one-on-one affair.

"If the president asked him to do that, that is a serious matter", said Risch. Mr. Comey volunteered that fact to Mr. Trump.

"If you put it all together, it's clear that he was trying to do everything in his power to stop the FBI investigation of Flynn", he told CNBC. The White House has given conflicting messages about the reasons for Comey's firing.

Early Wednesday, Trump took to Twitter to announce his pick for FBI director - Christopher Wray, a former Justice Department official who was New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's lawyer during the George Washington Bridge lane-closing investigation.

If political events were holidays, for the liberals, former FBI Director James Comey's highly anticipated Thursday testimony would be Christmas and Comey would be Santa Claus. Comey said he felt it was not only important to keep Trump in the loop, but also to spread the word and weaken the ability of the Russians to use it as blackmail.

The problem for Trump is Comey is considered a straight-down-the-line lawman who kept meticulous notes and spoke about his encounters with the president immediately after each exchange with a variety of people.

In the tradition of the Clintonometer and the Trump Apocalypse Watch, the Impeach-O-Meter is a wildly subjective and speculative daily estimate of the likelihood that Donald Trump leaves office before his term ends, whether by being impeached (and convicted) or by resigning under threat of same.
