No qualms for Quiros as late birdie quartet earns two-shot lead

Playing in just his 15th European Tour event, after gaining his card via the qualifying school a year ago, Soderberg recorded eight birdies and an eagle in a flawless 10-under-par 61 at Verdura Golf Club.

Sweden's Sebastian Soderberg went into round three level with Hoey in second place but a 77 saw him fall back to seven under.

"It was hard towards the end, I used up a lot of adrenaline yesterday", Hoey commented, referring to Thursday when he came close to recording the European Tour's first ever round of 59.

Zander Lombard and David Horsey trail the Spaniard by just three shots, and the other contenders aren't too far behind, either.

The Antrim man was just two behind Quiros at the start of the day's play but hit five bogeys, a double-bogey and three birdies in an uneven round.

Five pars in succession put paid to that, but the world No. 499 finished in style with birdies on the 17th and 18th to enjoy a two-shot lead over Spain's Alvaro Quiros, whose 63 included a hole-in-one on the 13th.

The six-time European Tour victor mixed five birdies and four bogeys during his round at Vendura Golf Club, where he saved par in dramatic fashion at the par-four 18th.

After winning twice on the European Tour in 2011 Quiros was ranked 21st in the world, but after trying to make swing changes he has gradually slipped to his current position of 703rd and missed 15 cuts in 23 events in 2016.

"It's a very nice situation for me, it's a long time since I've had the opportunity", Quiros said.

"Today it was really hard to putt, the wind was blowing insane strong and on the greens the perception was always changing with the intensity of this wind". I've been very lucky this week.

"It kind of helped me to keep going, I didn't feel like it stopped me".
