USA launches NAFTA renegotiation countdown

20 Mai 2017

The notification begins a 90-day period in which Trump trade officials must consult with Congress on the objectives of the trade talks.

"The United States seeks to support higher-paying jobs in the United States and to grow the U.S. economy by improving USA opportunities under NAFTA", he said.

U.S. President Donald Trump's threats to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement are coming to fruition. However, there are certainly specific challenges within fresh produce that NAFTA modernisation can aggressively address, so we are pleased that this opportunity has been realized by the Administration. That letter observes that NAFTA was negotiated when "digital trade was in its infancy", indicating that new provisions on electronic commerce may be forthcoming. Open trade is critical to ensuring North American consumers have access to fresh fruit and vegetables year-round, as well as ensuring growth and economic sustainability.

These goals will be pursued consistent with US priorities and the negotiating objectives established by Congress in the Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities and Accountability Act, the letter stated.

Congressman Tim Ryan, D-13 District, in a statement issued Thursday said he is apprehensive about the transparency of those negotiations, citing what he called an Administration of evasion and secrecy. China was the largest market, importing $21.4 billion in American ag products past year.

There were reports in April that Trump was considering an executive order to withdraw the usa from NAFTA. This is the first step toward reshaping a trade deal that became law in 1994 and changed the face of trade in North America.

Robert Lighthizer, the US Trade Representative notified Congress of their intentions to revamp their pact with Canada and Mexico, which accounts for $1 trillion in annual trade.

The senators noted that NAFTA has led to "tremendous growth" in US trade with Mexico and Canada, and that it has "integrated cross-border supply chains that benefit USA employers, and more than tripled USA exports of goods, including agricultural and manufactured goods, and services".

In the letter to Congress, Lighthizer expresses the Trump administrations commitment to concluding the negotiations with substantive results for United States businesses and workers. "Central to any successful NAFTA negotiations will be changes to Canada's new policies created to harm bilateral trade and dump their structural dairy surplus on the world market". "But we're going to give renegotiation a good, strong shot".

In February, the Congressional Research Service released a report on NAFTA, which found the trade agreement "did not cause the huge job losses feared by the critics or the large economic gains predicted by supporters".

"Before NAFTA went into effect - by the way, NAFTA, a total disaster - there were 280,000 autoworkers in Michigan", said President Trump at Ypsilanti, Michigan's American Center for Mobility during a visit last March.
