Lawmakers: Rosenstein Mum On White House Pressure For Comey Memo

20 Mai 2017

White House hopes that Donald Trump could leave scandalous allegations at home were crushed in a one-two punch of revelations that landed shortly after his departure.

"We owe it to the American people to find out what happened, and I'm encouraged to see that the justice department has appointed a special counsel to lead the investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election", Indian-American Congressman Ami Bera said.

Asked whether Rosenstein said if he received any pressure to come down hard on Comey, Rep. Sherman (D-CA) said, "He avoided at least 10 times any question that would answer your question".

Former FBI director and prosecutor Robert Mueller, known for his independence in high-profile government investigations, is taking on a new challenge in the midst of a crisis that threatens the presidency of the US.

Comey, abruptly fired by Trump last week, has agreed to testify in public sometime after Memorial Day, the committee said in a statement. Mueller was tapped for that post the day after another report from The Times, subsequently confirmed to NPR by two sources, that Trump had asked Comey to scuttle the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The new headlines were a fresh indication that Trump would not be able to change the subject from what appears to be an intensifying investigation reaching toward the president and his inner circle.

Mueller was former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey's predecessor.

Before he was sacked after just 24 days on the job, former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn rejected a military plan seven months in the making to retake Raqqa, Syria, from the Islamic State, a plan that went against the wishes of Turkey - a country whose interests Flynn was being paid $530,000 to represent, McClatchy DC reported Wednesday night.

"There is no collusion between, certainly myself and my campaign, but I can only speak for myself and the Russians. I think he will provide a great deal of comfort on both sides of the aisle". "By grandstanding and politicizing the investigation into Russia's actions, James Comey created unnecessary pressure on our ability to engage and negotiate with Russian Federation".

Trump reportedly bragged to Russian officials about squashing the FBI's Russia investigation
The United States government officially announced past year that Russian Federation had meddled in the 2016 election. Bush White House, said that transcripts of meetings with foreign leaders usually "are treated like the crown jewels".

Singapore-based IG market analyst Jingyi Pan said the focus on the Comey investigation could maintain market jitters. "Once again, the real story is that our national security has been undermined by the leaking of private and highly classified conversations".

Among Trump's senior White House advisers are several former campaign officials, including his son-in-law Jared Kushner, Steve Bannon, Stephen Miller and Kellyanne Conway.

Mueller, 72, was named on Wednesday by the justice department to probe alleged Russian efforts to sway November's presidential election in favor of Donald Trump and to investigate whether there was any collusion between Trump's campaign team and Moscow.

One lawmaker said it's evidence that the Trump Administration is taking this situation seriously, while Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said it's about "giving American people full confidence in the outcome".

The White House denied that account.

He says his memo is not a finding of official misconduct and is not a statement of reasons to justify Comey's firing.

The Justice Department on Friday distributed prepared remarks that Rosenstein delivered to Congress in separate briefings.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller to the position in a letter obtained by CNN. He says he thought that move was appropriate and produced a memo summarizing what he said were his "longstanding concerns" over Comey's handling of the Clinton email investigation.

The investigation into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation takes an unexpected twist. "Believe me, there's no collusion".
