"I still have a lot of confidence in the Senate intelligence committee", Toomey said.

"We need our Republican colleagues to join us in standing up, to put country over party and work with Democrats to get the truth of Director Comey's firing, to protect the integrity of the investigation into Russian interference in our election and to get to the bottom of yesterday's report", Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY said.

Democrats are working behind the scenes to try to get wary and concerned GOP senators to join them in their push to block any selection unless Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein names a special counsel.

Cornyn and Gowdy likely would have faced a hard confirmation process given their partisan backgrounds. The latest involved firing the FBI director leading the investigation into Russian meddling in the US election (and possible collusion by the Trump campaign), and then the president outing an important intelligence source to Russian visitors in the Oval Office. John Cornyn, days after student booed Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos at Bethune-Cookman University this week.

The comment came Tuesday after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he recommended that President Donald Trump nominate the federal appeals court judge for the post.

Cornyn has served as Texas' Attorney General, a Texas Supreme Court justice and a local judge.

Cornyn has been identified as one of about a dozen contenders for the nomination.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska was the first Republican senator on Wednesday to suggest a special prosecutor was needed to investigate the Russian Federation allegations. The Justice Department interviewed eight candidates over the weekend, three of whom are current or former politicians and none of whom have the kind of nonpartisan support that Comey had when President Obama selected him in 2013.

"The key here, of course, is getting some of our Republican colleagues to join us", Schumer said.

Sen. John Barrasso, a Republican from Wyoming, said he thought Cornyn "would have been a great choice".

On CBS's "Face the Nation" last month, Cornyn said investigating ties to the Trump campaign is a "legitimate area of inquiry" and "there is no question that Putin is trying to undermine our democracy and undermine public confidence in our institutions".
