President Donald Trump lashed out on Thursday over his Justice Department's appointment of a special counsel to investigate possible ties between his 2016 presidential campaign and Russian Federation, calling it "the single greatest witch hunt" in USA history.
Despite initially opposing appointment of an independent counsel, House Speaker Paul Ryan said Thursday that the development "helps assure people and the Justice Department that they're going to go do their jobs independently and thoroughly, which is what we've called for all along".
The FBI is investigating alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election, including looking into any possible links between Trump campaign associates and the Kremlin.
On a day of fast-moving developments, the House intelligence committee announced that it, too, had asked for documents, in this case from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department.
Flynn Subpoena Burr, the Senate intelligence panel's chairman, said members are awaiting word from Flynn's attorneys whether he will comply with a subpoena for his records. Flynn, through his lawyer, had earlier asked for immunity from "unfair prosecution" in exchange for agreeing to cooperate with the committee.
Flynn's contacts with Russians during the presidential campaign, as well as his work for the Turkish government, are under investigation. The White House had said Mr. Trump made the decision to fire Comey only after receiving the recommendation from Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Democratic senators had been prepared to press Rosenstein Thursday to take the step of appointing a special prosecutor, but were left praising him instead before his closed-door briefing began. "Mr. Rosenstein has done the right thing", Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY said on the Senate floor. He went on to sharply criticize the investigation into his campaign's possible collusion with Russian officials to influence the usa election. "I now have significantly greater confidence that the investigation will follow the facts wherever they lead". "I look forward to this matter concluding quickly".
No indication yet from Flynn on subpoena
The Intelligence Committee is seeking to interview Flynn as part of its probe of Russian election interference. Popular Video SNL is not a fan of the Trump administration, and it shows with every new skit they produce.
But Trump, after issuing a measured statement when the news first broke Wednesday evening, allowed his resentment to burst forth Thursday in angry morning tweets. He gave no examples.
Mueller, a former federal prosecutor at the Justice Department, was confirmed as FBI director days before the September 11, 2001, attacks that would ultimately shape his tenure.
However, Trump told NBC News last week that he would have fired Comey "regardless" of what the Justice Department said.
Senators said that Rosenstein steered clear of specifics while making clear that Mueller has wide latitude to pursue the investigation wherever it leads, potentially including criminal charges.
It was widely reported that Russian Federation was hopeful of a resetting of the relationship between Moscow and Washington following Trump's election victory last November.
The Washington Post has reported that former FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump fired last week, noted in a personal memo that Trump had asked him to let the Michael Flynn probe go.
Trump is leaving town Friday on his first foreign trip, and aides have been hopeful the journey will be a chance for the administration to get back on track after weeks of chaos and distractions.
