A letter from U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to congressional leaders says the administration wants NAFTA to be "modernized".

The letter gives Canada and Mexico a 90-day notice before the negotiations could begin. As far as Nebraska is concerned, NAFTA isn't broken and doesn't need fixing.

"What Canada has said from Day 1 is that we are ready to come to the table at any time", Freeland told the House of Commons Wednesday evening. Most of his base supporters reside in farm country, but they'll change their tunes if Trump undermines NAFTA with his off-the-cuff comments.

The White House notified the Senate Finance and House Ways and Means committees that the administration will update the 23-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray, speaking at a news conference with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Washington, said the trade pact needed updating after almost 25 years.

"If we all do our jobs well, the result will be a stronger agreement that spurs economic growth and job creation, not just in the United States, but across North America", he said.

Negotiations, however, will begin no earlier than August 16. The original negotiations for NAFTA built on a pre-existing trade bilateral deal with Canada that took 20 months to complete, according to the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington.

He also said that while he expects tåhe agreement to be trilateral, some of the negotiations will be bilateral.

The Mexican government says it "welcomes" the opportunity to renegotiate NAFTA.

"We will continue to consult closely with the provinces and territories, industry, unions, civil society, think tanks, academics, indigenous peoples, women, youth and the general public".

Steve Verheul will be the chief negotiator on Canada's NAFTA renegotiation team, CTV News has confirmed. "U.S. fresh produce and floral retail markets depend on supplies from overseas".

"Nine million American jobs depend on trade and investment with Canada". After Trump publicly slammed Canada's dairy, softwood and energy industries, the US imposed a 24 per cent tariff on Canadian softwood lumber.

In addition to the $4 billion that USA sugar producers say they have lost in the past four years, refiners complain they aren't receiving enough raw sugar which they had expected to get from Mexico.

"We believe today's action signals the beginning of a strong trade agenda for USA exporters".

"The Trump Administration understands that NAFTA has been an unequivocal success story for American agriculture", said Spurlock.

"W$3 e note that NAFTA was negotiated 25 years ago, and while our economy and businesses have changed considerably over that period, NAFTA has not". NAFTA took on a starring role during the election campaign past year, with Trump promising voters to either throw it out or renegotiate a deal he claims sent millions of USA manufacturing jobs to Mexico.
