"Apart from the presidents he served, he was arguably the single most important figure in the creation of modern conservatism", David Greenberg, a Rutgers University political scientist, wrote in an essay for Politico a year ago.

"I am profoundly sad and heartbroken to report that my husband, Roger Ailes, passed away this morning", the statement read.

Former President George H.W. Bush tweeted that while his "friend" Ailes "wasn't ideal", he may not have been elected president without him.

The family statement called Ailes "a patriot, profoundly grateful to live in a country that gave him so much opportunity to work hard, to rise-and to give back".

The Observer reached out to lawyer Nancy Erika Smith, who is representing several of the women harassed by Ailes, about how his death would impact pending cases. Ailes partnered with media king, Rupert Murdoch and used Murdoch's money as an investment to build Fox News to become the widely successful cable network that it's known for presently.

Born in Warren, Ohio, Ailes was afflicted with hemophilia.

The 1968 election, Ailes told McGinniss, was the start of "a whole new concept" that melded entertainment and politics in an intimate way.

Ailes' was also an adviser to the Donald Trump campaign in 2016, where he assisted him with debate preparation.

Ailes also worked for George H.W. Bush, who won the presidency four years.
