No rush to Trump judgment, Ryan says; Dems demand deep probe

18 Mai 2017

Most Democrats are fighting Trump's decision to fire Comey by calling for a special prosecutor to probe Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign, anxious Comey's firing was meant to blunt that investigation.

In the wake of a reported FBI memo that James Comey was asked by Trump to drop the federal investigation into ex-National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, Schumer said the only way forward was a special prosecutor and an independent investigation.

"We need to have all the facts, and it is appropriate for the House Oversight Committee to request this memo", said Ryan spokeswoman AshLee Strong.

The top Democrat on the House intelligence committee said Wednesday that "the last thing (President Donald Trump) probably needs right now is for Vladimir Putin to be vouching for him", after the Russian president denied that his United States counterpart had disclosed classified information to Russian officials.

Comey's memo, an apparent effort to create a paper trail of his contacts with the White House, would be the clearest evidence to date that the president has tried to influence the investigation.

John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said late Tuesday that the developments had reached "Watergate size and scale".

The White House has played down the importance and secrecy of the information Trump gave to the Russians, which had been supplied by Israel under an intelligence-sharing agreement.

The person who described the Comey memo to the AP was not authorized to discuss it by name and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The White House vigorously denied it all.

The White House has issued a statement to flatly deny this allegation, saying Trump had never asked Comey or other individuals to "end any investigation".

The meeting supposedly took place one day after Flynn had resigned from his position, after it emerged he had misled Vice President Mike Pence about his conversations with Russian Federation during the election campaign.

The Senate intelligence committee on Wednesday asked Comey to appear before the panel in both open and closed sessions.

The intensifying drama comes as Trump is set to embark Friday on his first foreign trip, which had been optimistically viewed by some aides as an opportunity to reset an administration floundering under an inexperienced president. Comey said he replied that "I agree he is a good guy" but said nothing to Trump about limiting the investigation.

Trump himself hasn't directly addressed the latest allegations that he pressured Comey to drop the Flynn investigation.
