United Nations 'demands' Pyongyang cease nuclear, missile tests

17 Mai 2017

Cho added that upon the request of South Korea, the United States and Japan, the Security Council agreed to convene an emergency session Tuesday in NY to discuss North Korea's ballistic missile test.

"It is considered an intermediate range ballistic missile of enhanced caliber compared to Musudan missiles that have continually failed", he said.

The United States would consider talks with North Korea if it halts all nuclear and ballistic missile tests, Washington's envoy to the United Nations said today as the UN Security Council considered new sanctions on Pyongyang.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un inspects the long-range strategic ballistic rocket Hwasong-12 (Mars-12) in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Monday.

"It is actually North Korea trying to intimidate the worldwide community", Haley said, "and Russian Federation itself should be concerned because that ballistic missile test was a signal to South Korea for their new elections, it was a signal to Russian Federation in how close it got, it was a signal to Japan being in the region, and it was a signal to us".

It claimed the test proved the missile's guidance and stabilization systems and capability to carry large-size heavy nuclear warhead.

According to The Associated Press, North Korea chose a high angle for the launch to "avoid neighbouring countries".

"North Korea does not believe that adopting soft or accommodating positions is the best way of inducing dialogue, but rather sees demonstrations of strength as most likely to eventually produce the negotiated outcomes it wants", Romberg said in an email to VOA.

La composition du gouvernement sera dévoilée mercredi — France

He added that the Defense Ministry was able to confirm the North's missile launch Sunday two minutes after it was sacked at around 5:29 a.m. from a South Korean Navy Aegis-equipped DDG-992 destroyer.

The U.S. military minimized the success of this launch, saying the type of missile fired on Sunday was "not consistent" with an ICBM.

"The DPRK [Democratic People's Republic of Korea] will bolster its self-defense capabilities as long as the United States continues its hostile policies toward the DPRK and imposes nuclear threats and makes blackmail", he said.

Han said Sunday's test-launch was "successful in flight". Those tests, however, likely gave North Korea significant technological knowledge they would have built upon for future tests. If shot at a standard trajectory, experts say, the missile would have travelled about 2,500 miles, far enough to hit the U.S. Air Force base in Guam. The system was created to destroy North Korean missiles before they had a chance to hit their target.

The U.S. ambassador said Russian Federation has the same decision to make as the rest of the global community: "You either support North Korea or you don't, but you have to choose".

"By relentlessly bringing in a number of strategic nuclear assets to the Korean peninsula, the gravely threatening the peace and safety and driving the situation to the brink of nuclear war", North Korean officials said in a statement in April.

Trump warned in an interview with Reuters this month that a "major, major conflict" with North Korea was possible.
