Sen. John Cornyn removes self from consideration for FBI director role

17 Mai 2017

Other possible nominees are, according to the reports, acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe; Alice Fisher, formerly Justice Department criminal division chief; and Michael Garcia, a NY state appeals judge and former U.S. attorney in New York's Southern District. "I've informed the administration that I'm committed to helping them find such an individual". Cornyn continued to hint throughout the morning that he still held interest in serving as Federal Bureau of Investigation director under President Donald Trump.

Trey Gowdy, a SC representative and former prosecutor known for his no-nonsense style in committee hearings, was another popular name from Capitol Hill to surface.

McCabe on Thursday contradicted the Trump White House when he called the probe into the possible Russian meddling in the USA election as "a highly significant investigation" and commented that Comey still "enjoyed broad support within the FBI".

"We, along with Senator Cornyn, agree that the primary focus of commencement should be a celebration of academic achievement", the statement said.

"My suspicion is he may be ready for a new challenge; he's been in the Senate now for quite a while", said Vanderbilt University law professor Brian Fitzpatrick, who worked as Cornyn's special counsel on the Supreme Court nominations of John Roberts and Samuel Alito. He has been a member of the Senate GOP leadership team for a decade and serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

A Republican senator's scheduled commencement address at a historically black university has been cancelled, amid fears of opposition and threats of protest from students.

Contradictions by Trump create credibility gap for aides
But with his disclosure of highly classified information to Russian diplomats, they've floundered to explain the decision. The system for how USA secrets are classified and the rules for how they're handled derive from an executive order.

Cornyn, the Senate's second-ranking Republican, was expected to speak at the Houston HBCU's ceremony on Saturday.

Candidates under consideration to replace fired FBI Director James Comey include a couple of sitting Capitol Hill lawmakers and the current acting director of the agency. He said the US Department of Justice was still interviewing candidates. She also served as deputy special counsel to the Senate special committee that investigated President Bill Clinton's Whitewater scandal. "I don't know if people were aware that he supports a lot of discriminatory policies and practices", Treviño says.

Fisher is a former assistant USA attorney general in charge of the Justice Department's criminal division and is now a partner in Latham & Watkins' Washington, D.C. office.

According to a new poll by the Wall Street Journal and NBC, only 29 percent of people approve of the president's decision to fire Director Comey.

Cornyn is the Senate majority whip and the No. 2 Republican, a job that often puts him in the position of speaking for the party and defending Trump.
