North Korea: New Missile Can Carry 'Heavy Nuclear Warhead'

17 Mai 2017

North Korea, increasingly isolated over its repeated weapons tests in violation of United Nations resolutions, on Monday renewed its accusation of a USA and South Korean intelligence plot to assassinate leader Kim Jong Un.

North Korean propaganda must be considered with wariness - Pyongyang has threatened for decades to reduce Seoul to a "sea of fire", for instance.

"In any case, we consider that nuclear and missile tests are unacceptable and there is the need to resume dialogue with North Korea, to stop intimidating it and find peaceful solutions to problems", Putin said.

"The test-fire aimed at verifying the tactical and technological specifications of the newly developed ballistic rocket capable of carrying a large-size heavy nuclear warhead", KCNA said.

However, the Pentagon's Pacific Command said on Sunday the type of missile that was sacked was "not consistent" with an ICBM.

North Korea fired the missile from a site northwest of Pyongyang, according to South Korea's military.

The test was North Korea's first military provocation after South Korean President Moon Jae In, known for his softer posture toward Pyongyang than his conservative predecessors, took office last week.

Two U.S. military officials told NBC News on Monday that preliminary assessments suggested the launch involved a KN-17, a liquid fuel single-stage missile.

There's also a political victory for North Korea. The missile fell in the central part of the Sea of Japan some 500 kilometers away from Russia's territory.

FOREIGN MINISTER MARGOT WALLSTROM: Perhaps our planet would say, I've been your best friend since the Industrial Revolution. In addition to the USA and Sweden, the other council nations are Russia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Iceland.

The test gives a boost to leader Kim Jong Un as he seeks to show his people that he's standing up to America and South Korea.

North Korea launched a new IRBM, known as Pukguksong-2 in North Korea, from the same site on February 12. Kim Jong Un has stated that North Korea will test several more missile and nuclear tests until they ideal its nuclear bombs program.

North Korea's missile launch did not pose a threat to Russian Federation, although it has provocative influence, there is nothing good in this, Putin said.

"North Korea seems to seek dialogue with the USA on equal footing by strengthening its nuclear capabilities", said Kim Yong-hyun, a professor at Dongguk University. Spokesman Moon Sang Gyun said it's still unlikely that North Korea has re-entry technology, which would return a warhead safely back into the atmosphere.

The missile flew for half an hour and reached an unusually high altitude before landing in the Sea of Japan, the South Korean, Japanese and U.S. militaries said.

"The president expressed deep regret over the fact that this reckless provocation ... occurred just days after a new government was launched in South Korea", senior presidential secretary Yoon Young-chan said.

Kim warned the United States not to "disregard or misjudge the reality that its mainland and Pacific operation region are in (North Korea's) sighting range for strike" and ordered his officials to develop more nuclear weapons and means of delivering them, according to the report.

North Korea is not thought to be able yet to make a nuclear warhead small enough to mount on a long-range missile, though some outside analysts think it can arm shorter-range missiles with warheads. It adds that the missile can carry a heavy nuclear warhead.
