Jose Mourinho more focused on silverware than top-four finish

17 Mai 2017

United know they can not break into the top four on the strength of their final two Premier League games against Southampton and Crystal Palace, as they trail Liverpool by eight points with only six left up for grabs.

"We made seven changes and with a good result and good play and we saw all the squad play with good concentration and focus and this is the most important thing".

"I don't want my players to feel the Europa League is our competition".

That means their only hope of Champions League qualification rests with beating Ajax in Stockholm on May 24 - and Mourinho has rotated players in Premier League matches in recent weeks as he has plotted his way through the Europa League. He gave the standard non-committal response just in case any bids come in, of course, but he comes across as settled and content at United, saying: "Of course I would like to be No1 but I know what my reality is".

"I'm not upset. We had to make that decision", he said.

"If we lose the final, we don't play Champions League". "For us, it's more important to win titles than to finish [in the] top four".

However, he feels Manchester United need to start winning league titles and get into the latter stages of the Champions League to be considered serious heavyweights again. We know that, but we fight for titles.

Mourinho told Sky Sports: "When people say that we gamble by going for the Europa League, well we didn't gamble".

"We were talking a lot and I think we believe when the new stadium opens the doors it will help the club achieve the last level", Pochettino added.

Paul Pogba will miss Manchester United's game at Southampton today after being granted compassionate leave following the death of his father, manager Jose Mourinho has revealed.

"To be honest it's another game against Tottenham. But we are there and we go to the final". City will play Real Madrid in Los Angeles and tackle Tottenham Hotspur in Nashville.

They are coming off from a 2:1 road win against relegated Middlebrough team but they also didn't manage to score a goal in last three matches in front of their home crowd.
