Friend of Trump: Comey was not obligated to tell Congress

17 Mai 2017

Now, two Comey associates tell NPR Trump, in their meeting, asked Comey to make the investigation of Michael Flynn go away.

"He was concerned", the second source said. Comey said he replied that "I agree he is a good guy" but said nothing to Trump about limiting the investigation.

President Trump has called reporters dishonest, said the media is "the enemy of the American people", and mused about making it easier to sue journalists.

Later, Attorney General Eric Holder said the move was prompted by a 2012 report on a foiled Al Qaeda plot in Yemen to blow up an airliner. The White House denies that account.

Trump abruptly fired Comey last week, in a move Democratic lawmakers decried as an attempt to short-circuit the Russian Federation investigation.

Another day of crisis at the White House further distracted top officials as they prepare Trump for his crucial first overseas trip, which is now all but certain to be overshadowed by the Comey memos, but begins on Friday when the President leaves for Saudi Arabia.

Comey's memo, an apparent effort to create a paper trail of his contacts with the White House, would be the clearest evidence to date that the president has tried to influence the investigation.

HORSLEY: But after that meeting, the president's own counterterrorism adviser was reportedly concerned enough he alerted USA intelligence agencies about what the president had said. "This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the President and Mr. Comey".

The FBI said they have no comment on the Times story. "Telling the FBI director to close down an investigation of your senior campaign adviser for his activities during your campaign for president, if that's true, that is obstruction of justice". He sent memos to his chief of staff that surfaced years later in The Times.

Cornyn and Gowdy met with Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Saturday to discuss the position. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) acknowledged that Cornyn would normally be a wonderful choice, but these are "not normal circumstances" and Trump can't afford to make such a political appointment with Democrats accusing him of trying to stifle the Russian Federation investigation.

"When I made a decision to just do it [fire Comey]", Trump told Holt. It has a lot to do with intent, with the context in which things are said and perhaps, the most important word in the statute: "'corruptly.' That means you not only have to prove that the person knew what he was doing was unlawful, but that he acted with a specific goal to undermine a proceeding".

The Republican chairman of the House oversight committee says he plans to demand that the Justice Department turn over all memos written by former FBI Director James Comey concerning his past meetings with President Donald Trump.

In the same string of tweets, he said he was committed to finding those who had been leaking information from within the White House.

"The country is being tested in unprecedented ways. I have my subpoena pen ready".

Farenthold says Comey would have been duty-bound to report to the Justice Department any command to stop the investigation.

We need to hear testimony immediately from Director Comey-in public.

Congress must obtain the reported Comey memos, he added. "I just want to understand it better. It's one thing to have to have the New York Times report it, it's another to be able to look at what it is", he said. Why has our Committee refused to follow up at all to demand these documents from the White House?

The Texas Republican said in a statement that the best place for him to serve is in the Senate. One Republican familiar with Cornyn's thinking, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Cornyn felt obligated to consider the job because Sessions asked him to, as well as out of a desire to restore stability at the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department.

As reporters huddled off the House floor questioning GOP lawmakers about the Comey memos, another staunch Trump loyalist, Rep. Louis Gohmert, R-Texas, walked by and entered the elevator as he quipped: "Almost sounds like fake news".
