Backed Forces Seize Key Syrian Town, Dam On Road To Raqqa

17 Mai 2017

"We've got a certain amount of supply in the country already that was used to equip the Syrian Arab Coalition and some of that may be distributed very quickly", Air Force Col. John Dorrian, a spokesman for Operation Inherent Resolve, the USA -led campaign against ISIS, told Pentagon reporters.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said yesterday he was confident the United States would be able to resolve tensions with Turkey over the US decision to arm Kurdish fighters in Syria.

Mr Erdogan said the "fight against terrorism should not be led with another terror organisation" and that "we want to know that our allies will side with us and not with terror organisations".

President Donald Trump approved arming the Syrian Kurdish militia this week to support the US -led offensive in Raqqa. He said USA -led forces had "almost completely" isolated Raqqa and expected troops to soon begin advancing "within striking distance" of the city.

"Both leaders affirmed their support for peace and stability in both Iraq and Syria".

The city is largely surrounded and it is only a matter of time before YPG and other forces in a Kurdish-Syrian Arab alliance launch an offensive against the city.

"This is yet another victory by the SAC and the SDF, our most committed and capable ground force partners in the fight against ISIS", coalition spokesman U.S. Col. John Dorrian said in a Central Command statement released Thursday.

The US is increasing the capabilities of what is known as an "intelligence fusion center" in Ankara to help Turkish officials better identify and track the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

The source said he thinks the White House spin is laughable, adding that folks in the administration are upset and anxious. But Comey did not say anything to Trump about limiting the investigation, replying, "I agree he is a good guy".

Also on Wednesday, the White House announced that Erdogan would arrive in Washington next Tuesday for talks with President Donald Trump.

It was the latest Islamic State stronghold to fall to the Kurdish-led fighters as they advance toward Raqqa - the seat of the militants' so-called caliphate along the Euphrates River.

"The SDF's increased pressure on ISIS from each flank allowed it to. clear the final neighbourhoods of the city and isolate Tabqa dam", said Centcom, referring to IS.

Yildirim added Washington was well aware of Ankara being against using the PKK terror group to eradicate Daesh in Syria, adding he could not imagine the USA choosing between a strategic partnership with Turkey and a terrorist organisation. Yildirim on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, has spoken out against a US decision to arm Syrian Kurdish fighters which Turkey regard as terrorists, saying it can not use one terror organization to try and defeat another terror group.

Erdogan has shown no signs of backing away from his demand that the USA break ties with the YPG, which is viewed in Turkey as linked to the PKK, or Kurdistan Workers Party.

A spokesman for the US -led coalition against IS, Col. John Dorrian, said Wednesday that the weapons would be delivered to the Kurds soon. Like Turkey, the USA considers that group a terrorist organization. Erdogan has demanded that Washington undo the arms decision, and said he would take up the issue with Trump.

Khalil dismissed the label, saying the USA would not supply arms to terrorists.
