Trump Pledges To Move Swiftly To Nominate New FBI Chief

The US President told reporters "we can make a fast decision" and that it was "possible" it could be by Friday.

"I think, in many ways, our institutions are under assault, both externally - and that's the big news here, is the Russian interference in our election system", said James Clapper, the former director of national intelligence.

He described the candidates being considered for the post as "outstanding people", "very well-known", and of the "highest level". "And that's what we want for the FBI", Trump said.

USA media quoted an unnamed White House official as saying that 11 candidates are being considered, including acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe.

Less than a week after former FBI Director James Comey was sacked by President Donald Trump, Comey is reportedly ready to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee, but he has one important condition that must be met if he is to testify: The hearing needs to be held in public.
