14 Mai 2017

India's top court on Friday upheld the death sentences of four men who were convicted in the fatal gang-rape and torture of a 23-year-old medical student on a moving bus in the Indian capital almost five years ago.

For nearly five years, the father of a young woman who was raped on December 16, 2012, and died of injuries 13 days later, had slept fitfully.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi said on Friday that justice has been delivered in the Nirbhaya case and that the court verdict is a reminder to work tirelessly for building a safe environment for women. However, the Supreme Court had issued a stay order on the sentence after the convicts appealed against it.

Actress Raveena Tandon tweeted, "May her tears flow No more.may the mothers daughter finally rest in peace.may all evil know there is a price to pay".

She and her friend were then thrown out of the bus.

"In the initial stages, the intention of all concerned must have been to save the victim by giving her proper medical treatment", the bench said.

Priyanka Chopra, our representative to the world, recently took to Twitter to share her feelings and it resonated the swarm of emotions, the nation is swaying in. The only thing that makes us feel sad why this decision is taken so late. "This awakening, this unified voice to stop such brutal and demonical crimes, as our Supreme Court said, is what we must never let go onto mute mode", she wrote. That when an entire country unified in wanting something, the action is taken.

Today, as the Supreme Court confirmed the death sentence for four of the rapists, the officer mentally thanked Nirbhaya for her consistent statements.

The four convicts, Mukesh Singh (27), Pawan Gupta (20), Vinay Sharma (21) and Akshay Thakur (29) were found guilty in the most brutal and barbaric attack on the 23-year-old paramedic student Jyoti Singh.
