Korean missile travels 450 miles

14 Mai 2017

South Korea says rival North Korea has launched a projectile believed to be a ballistic missile.

"Let this latest provocation serve as a call for all nations to implement far stronger sanctions against North Korea", the White House said in a brief statement.

Donald Trump has been briefed on North Korea's latest missile launch and believes Russian Federation must be unhappy with the firing as the missile fell close to the country, the White House said Sunday.

"The government strongly warns North Korea not to test the will of our government and the global community, including the US and China, for enduring peace and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", the ministry said.

The launch also comes as troops from the U.S., Japan and two European nations gather on remote U.S. islands in the Pacific for drills that are partly a message to North Korea.

The statement says the US maintains its "ironclad commitment" to stand with its allies in the face of the serious threat posed by North Korea. Those are the missiles the most anxious about, with the ability to reach the U.S. West Coast.

Writing on his organization's blog, Wright pointed out that the Japan's Ministry of Defense had the latest launch reaching an altitude of 2,000 kilometers (1,242 miles), considerably higher than would be needed for the distance the missile traveled during what was reported as a 30-minute flight time.

Abe said, "Japan is closely cooperating with the USA and South Korea and analyzing the situation as we firmly respond to the development".

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff had few other details, including whether the launch was successful or what kind of projectile was sacked Sunday.

The Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the ruling Workers' Party, said the regime will continue building up its military for stronger self-defense as "the imperialist USA and its followers are notching up pressure on us" and "driving the situation of the Korean Peninsula out of control by warmongering".

"It is possibly a new type of missile", Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada said.

The launch drew a sharp rebuke from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Yoon quoted Moon as saying South Korea is "leaving open the possibility of dialogue with North Korea, but we should sternly deal with a provocation to prevent North Korea from miscalculating".

A missile launched near the city of Kusong, in western North Korea, flew across the country and into the Sea of Japan/East Sea, hitting the water about 60 miles from Vladivostok in eastern Russian Federation, according to U.S. officials.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuhide Suga said the government didn't initiate a "J alert", a nationwide alert system for missile launches.

"North Korea launched a ballistic missile at 5:27am this morning in Pyongan Province", South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said, adding, that it is now analyzing the launch.

That missile, launched April 29, blew up over land in North Korean territory, according to a spokesman for the US Pacific Command.
