Trump Says Russia Must Be "Laughing" At US Over Comey

13 Mai 2017

The letter marked Mr Comey's first known comments on his firing at the hands of Mr Trump, which sent shockwaves across the country over the timing and perceived breach of due process and natural justice. Trump's timeline contradicts the one offered by the Justice Department, the Vice President, and White House aides in the last few days.

"There has been no effort to impede our investigation to date".

Mr. Trump said one of the three times was at a dinner with Mr. Comey, which Mr. Trump said was requested by the director with the aim of keeping his job.

"I can confidently tell you that the vast majority of employees enjoyed a deep and positive connection to Director Comey". He also pledged to report any future interference attempts to the committee. Unconfirmed media reports said that Comey in recent weeks sought more financial resources from the government to support the probe.

Democrats have said the FBI's work will now be hopelessly tainted and demanded a special prosecutor akin to those appointed during Richard Nixon's Watergate scandal or the run-up to Bill Clinton's impeachment.

"The challenge they have is that the president sometimes moves so rapidly that they don't get a team around that gets it organized", said Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker and a Trump ally. But the acting director's contradiction of the White House version of events raises even more questions about the real reasons that Trump fired Comey.

Some of Mr Trump's fellow Republicans called his dismissal of Mr Comey troubling. "I was going to fire Comey", Trump told NBC. "I said 'If it's possible, will you let me know, am I under investigation?' He said 'You are not under investigation, '" Trump said.

A congressional source with knowledge of the matter said on Wednesday that Comey told lawmakers within the past few days he had asked the Justice Department to make additional resources available - mainly more staffing - for the Russian Federation probe.

Three U.S. officials said Comey recently asked Rosenstein for more manpower to help with the Russian Federation investigation. Sen.

The president added of Comey, "He's a showboat". "The FBI has been in great turmoil - you know that, I know that, everybody knows that". I was going to fire regardless of recommendations.

But Sanders attributed the discrepancy to the fact that she hadn't received all the relevant information on Wednesday, when she said Trump had acted on the advice of Rosenstein. "I was going to fire regardless of recommendation".

As criticism over Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey's abrupt firing continued to spread, White House officials have reportedly scrapped President Donald Trump's plans to visit the FBI's headquarters, NBC News reported on Thursday.

Mr Rosenstein reportedly made his threat unless the White House conveyed that the decision began with the president, according to U.S. media. "I have the highest respect for his considerable abilities and his integrity", McCabe added.

She maintained that Mr Trump "very much had been thinking about letting Mr Comey go since 9 November".

Republicans and Democrats vowed the House and Senate Intelligence Committees' investigations into the Russian Federation claims would continue.
