China's Belt and Road investments since 2013 total $60 billion - state planner

Shaanxi aims to establish five centers to implement the Belt and Road Initiative - one for transportation, trade and logistics; another for worldwide industrial cooperation; a third for technology and education; a fourth for global tourism; and the fifth for regional finance.

Appearing as well are ongoing installments of "Belt and Road Bedtime Stories", in which a father-daughter pair, supposedly from the US but living in Beijing, implausibly discuss the positives of OBOR and globalization before bedtime.

"There's a lot of scepticism about China's plans".

"Everyone wants to be China's friend now with Trump in office", said a senior Asian diplomat in Beijing.

Iqbal said that though the visit of the Chinese President faced a delay owing to the negative politics in the country, the government managed to launch projects worth over Dollars 50 billion, including in the energy and infrastructure sectors. The father replies that it's just a big part of it and there's a lot more.

"We are strengthening strategic cooperation between Greece and China", Tsipras said in a tweet that also featured a photo taken upon his arrival.

"The Initiative will trigger the development of other infrastructure development projects in the developing countries such as container terminals, transportation including roads and railway", Ip said.

China has, though, outlined its ambitions in Chinese language pieces.

"It's China's idea but it belongs to the world", he said.

The four people who died in Thursday's crash were in one vehicle that became engulfed in flames after a collision. Two guards inside the GARDA armoured vehicle suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.

There are risks involved, however.

China is now working on a new Silk Road of ports, railways and roads in Pakistan to expand trade in a vast arc of countries across Asia, Europe and Africa.

"We have some serious reservations about it, because of sovereignty issues", said India's finance and defense minister, Arun Jaitley, at an Asian Development Bank meeting this month in Yokohama, Japan.

"We will also strive to operate the upstream business such as building warehouses and logistics parks and transportation service to meet the rising demand in the countries like Pakistan, UK, the Netherlands and Spain".

The government of Syria is also sending a Cabinet-level minister, the Syrian ambassador to China told Reuters this week.

Central to the project in Pakistan is the renovation of a 487-kilometre road that is part of China's only land passage to the Middle East.

During the meeting, more than 50 memorandums of understanding, plans, cooperation letters and cooperation projects in transportation, energy and communications will be signed, Chinese government officials say.

That is truly an example of win-win cooperation, and if it is on that basis that the belt and road initiative continues to develop, we should all welcome it.

The first freight train to run from the United Kingdom to China departed yesterday (10 April), carrying goods like vitamins, baby products and pharmaceuticals as Britain seeks to burnish its global trading credentials for when it leaves the European Union.
