Texas bill could deny transgender wrestler title defense

12 Mai 2017

If enacted, this bill would dismantle Texas' safety inspection program and institute an "inspection program replacement fee" due at a vehicle's registration or registration renewal.

Wednesday's 20-10 vote sends the bill to the state House.

In defending the measure, Hall argued the legislation was not meant to automatically disqualify transgender athletes but instead give UIL the oversight authority to "protect the other students who are playing" from "unsafe situations".

On Monday afternoon, HB 673 was placed on the House's calendar for Wednesday, but because the chamber was still debating bills slated for the previous Saturday's calendar on Wednesday evening, it probably won't reach the floor for debate before the Thursday night deadline.

But Democrats in the state senate let it be known that they saw the bill as an offense to one group above all: transgender students. "This bill is addressing individuals who. are taking steroids, then make sure, as a result of that, the events remain safe and fair". "Are we going to make them into concentration camps?" asked an incredulous Garcia. The UIL has a ban on steroids but its rules allow their use if they have been "dispensed, prescribed, delivered and administered by a medical practitioner for a valid medical objective".

The new bill would eliminate that.

"All young people should have the opportunity to play interscholastic sports and have their personal dignity respected", advocacy group Equality Texas said.

Not all transgender people necessarily take steroids.

God Brought You Back, Aisha Buhari Tells Freed Chibok Girls
People read news paper headlines, including stories on the names of Nigerian Chibok kidnapped girls released in Abuja, Nigeria. Even though it was the Chibok schoolgirls that captured the world's attention, Boko Haram's cruelty extends far beyond that .

In a statement on its blog, Equality Texas says, "If the intent of SB 2095 is to correct for the UIL's current misguided birth certificate policy, it fails to do so". "Unlike other companies who see telehealth as an app or a phone service, we have always maintained that telehealth should extend the relationship between patients and the healthcare brands they trust".

When transgender wrestler Mack Beggs won a girls' state championship, his victory drew jeers and complaints that his steroid therapy treatment had given him an unfair advantage against girls who risked injury just by getting on the mat with him.

The bill is the latest in a series of headline-making efforts that Texas lawmakers have introduced this year.

West said this bill would aid older students wishing to return to college and graduate.

The legislation would also require local governments to annually publish a "No New Taxes Rate" - which is the rate that would raise the same amount of money as the previous year - and restrict debt service taxes to debt that has been approved by voters.

The House's proposed budget cuts funding for higher education, but those cuts are meager in comparison to the Senate's budget, which would slash funding for universities significantly.

Public restrooms: The so-called bathroom bill missed a key deadline in the House after passing the Senate.
