McGirt grabs early lead at Sawgrass

12 Mai 2017

Rickie Fowler, who turned pro in 2009, and won Rookie of the Year honors in 2010, is looking to build on an already successful career on the PGA tour.

(AP) - Mackenzie Hughes arrived at the TPC Sawgrass with no scar tissue and played his first round at The Players Championship with no bogeys.

His wedge play has become so precise that Johnson has said it's already causing him to take fewer chances with par-5 holes. "I made sure to hit balls before we got married, just to see if I could play with it on". And you don't see it - guys are very good 99.9 percent of the time and that was very frustrating, because I knew where I was, from a normal lie, it wasn't too bad.

"You don't know whether to say "be good", "go" or "sit" because it's such a tricky hole, but it was a pretty good yardage for me to hit a solid 52-degree [wedge] and fortunately it worked out ideal for me and went in".

Scott waited for the cheers and celebrations to fade when he took aim. His ball flew over the water and landed a couple of yards in front of the hole, nearly going in on the second bounce. Raised areas around greens, good view lines between holes, easy access to the course. these were all incorporated with ticket-holders in mind. From the middle of the fairway, Fowler blocked it so badly to the right that it hit a cart path and went deep into the pines. To chip out sideways would risk chipping into the water. He felt he had no choice but to find a gap in the top of the trees and go for the green.

"I still have a phenomenal opportunity in front of me", he said. "But it just didn't cut". He walked off the green with a double-bogey five.

Add them up, and Scott had a 70. A penalty drop and three shots later, he had a second, consecutive double bogey to sign for.

That's how quickly it can change on a course that has been described with every word from exciting to dramatic to frightening to aggravating.

Sergio Garcia, for example, used to have "10" in honor of Real Madrid winning a Champions League title for the 10th time.

William McGirt fully deserved his status as the early pacesetter after producing two back-nine eagles en route to a five-under 67. He charged down the stretch on Sunday at Wakefield, making birdies, nailing his final approach shot to a foot at the 18th hole to clinch it.

McGirt, boosted by two eagles, put his previous bad form at Sawgrass behind him on a course where he has finished no better than 43rd in four previous starts.

When Mickelson began his round on Thursday, the first for The Players Championship, it was his first look at the course. He made double bogey, shot 38 on his second nine and had to settle for a 70.

It was like that all day. "I've played here for 25 years, so it's not like that one round was going to make a big difference", he said.

Fellow Ulsterman Graeme McDowell had a one under par 71, while Masters champion Sergio Garcia recorded only the eighth ever hole-in-one at the infamous 17th on his way to a round of one over.

Jordan Spieth was asked why, when the conversations turns to the best player in the world, he is not mentioned more often because he doesn't possess the power and length that current No. 1 Dustin Johnson, Day or Rory McIlroy do.

Before that, there was a 14-year gap for a hole-in-one on No. 17 dating to Miguel Angel Jimenez in 2002. All told, 147 players will tee it up beginning Thursday in the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. He remains one of the most popular players on the tour.
