Currently, the acceptable conditions for medical marijuana use are: cancer, HIV/AIDS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, epilepsy, neuropathies, Huntington's disease, Crohn's disease, post-traumatic stress disorder, intractable seizures, sickle cell anemia, severe chronic or intractable pain and being terminally ill. The Governor was joined for the bill signing by two of the initiative's primary supporters, Senator Richard Ojeda (D-Logan) and Delegate Mike Pushkin (D-Kanawha), as well as Senator Mike Woelfel (D-Cabell) and Dr. Rahul Gupta the State Health Officer and Commissioner of the Department of Health and Human Resources' Bureau for Public Health.
The bill charges the Bureau of Public Health with regulating medical marijuana growers, processors, and dispensaries.
However, an ID card does not entitle any patient to grow or smoke marijuana. Patients whose doctors recommend marijuana will be able to obtain it in the form of pills, oils, gels, creams, ointments, tinctures, liquids, and vaporizable extracts from state-regulated dispensaries. The government puts marijuana in the same category as heroin: a Schedule 1 drug that has the "high potential for abuse and no accepted medical treatment use".
The survey studied the patterns of personal use of marijuana and took the opinion of Americans who are 18 years old and above. The legal cannabis market will have an annual growth rate of 16 percent.

Recreational marijuana is already legalized in Alaska, Maine, California, Massachusetts, and Nevada. Washington, D.C legalized it in 2015. Eight of the 29 medical marijuana states also allow recreational use.
A provision that expires with the federal short-term spending plan on April 28 prohibits Justice Department interference in state-level medical cannabis programs.
Employers are not required to make any accommodation of the use of medical marijuana on the property or premises of any place of employment.
